Funding:

Make sure you apply for merit based scholarships by the JANUARY 15th deadline. There are additional national and school-wide scholarships you may be eligible for. 

 

GW Scholarships:

 

  • Walter Green Fellowship: 
    The Walter Green Fellowships are for Master's students who intend a career in public service or government and wrok in a paid job or internship for at least 15 hours a week. The student can be full or part time, but must be or will be employed in a paid job or paid internship related to their program at GW in the DC Metro Area at the time of application. (GW employees are not eligible.)

     

  • Career Development: 
    Career Development Fellowships are intended to assist students who are working/interning either full- or part-time in the DC Metro area and are pursuing or wish to pursue graduate (Master's level) study at GW to enhance their knowledge and skills. Assumed is that these students will add the dimension of real world experience to the classroom and that they will, in turn, employ the new knowledge and skills from their courses at GW in the workplace.

     

  • The Phi Delta Gamma Graduate Scholarship: 
    Phi Delta Gamma, a national graduate fraternity founded in 1922, actively supports graduate education in all fields of study. Members have earned or are pursuing advanced degrees and represent high standards in scholarship, professionalism, and service. Phi Delta Gamma is a unique interdisciplinary organization, committed to the advancement of graduate education. It provides:

    • A forum for intellectual development and exchange of ideas across all disciplines

    • Financial, educational, and advisory support to graduate students in master's, doctoral, and other professional programs

    • Opportunities for graduate women and men to use their knowledge in service to their peers, their universities, and their communities

 

  • Bryce Harlow Fellowship Program: 
    The Bryce Harlow Foundation Fellowships are targeted for graduate students (J.D. students are also eligible) who are studying part-time while working full-time. Students must express a firm desire to enter the advocacy profession in public affairs, government relations, or lobbying. Generally, Bryce Harlow Foundation Fellowship recipients are studying public policy, political management, legislative affairs, business, or law. Applicants must clearly indicate the courses and specific focus of their studies that will lead to a career in government relations and lobbying.

     

  • Dolores Zohrab Liebmann Fellowship:
    To support students with financial need who hold promise for achievement and distinction in their chosen fields of study.

     

  • Foreign Language & Area Studies (FLAS) Academic Year Fellowship: 
    The U.S. Department of Education Foreign Language and Area Studies (FLAS) Fellowship Program provides academic year fellowships to institutions of higher education. The grant to GWU, written by the Institute for Middle East Studies and the Sigur Center for Asian Studies, assists graduate (PhD and Master's candidates) and professional students (JD and MD) at George Washington University to further language study and area/international studies. The number of awards is contingent on funding. Information found on this page relates to Academic Year FLAS Fellowships only.

     

  • Foreign Language & Area Studies (FLAS) Summer Fellowship: 
    The U.S. Department of Education Foreign Language and Area Studies (FLAS) Fellowship Program provides summer fellowships to institutions of higher education. The grant to GWU, written by the Institute for Middle East Studies and the Sigur Center for Asian Studies, assists graduate (Master's, PhD), professional students (JD, MD) and undergraduate students at George Washington University to further language study and area/international studies. The Summer FLAS fellowships are intended to help students gain the equivalent of a year's worth of college-level language study. Applicants must be U.S. citizens or permanent residents.

     

    The Summer FLAS supports undergraduates and graduates enrolled in:

    • formal domestic programs of intensive language study at the intermediate or advanced level in one of the targeted languages

    • formal overseas programs of intensive language study at the intermediate or advanced level in one of the targeted languages.

    • The Summer FLAS also supports graduate students enrolled in:

    • formal domestic programs of intensive language study at the beginning level in one of the targeted languages.

    • The Summer FLAS does not support:

    • Independent study.

    • Dissertation research.

    • Internship programs.

    • Undergraduates studying a target language at the beginning level.

       

  • Fulbright Research Grant: 
    Applicants for study/research grants design their own projects and will typically work with advisers at foreign universities or other institutes of higher education. The study/research grants are available in approximately 140 countries. Program requirements vary by country, so the applicant’s first step is to familiarize themselves with the program summary for the host country.

     

  • Fulbright English Teaching Assistantship: 
    The English Teaching Assistant (ETA) Programs place Fulbrighters in classrooms abroad to provide assistance to the local English teachers. ETA’s help teach English language while serving as cultural ambassadors for the U.S. The age and academic level of the students varies by country, ranging from kindergarten to university level. Applicants for English Teaching Assistant Programs can apply to only one country. Consult the table below for details on specific country requirements and numbers of awards.

     

  • Boren Fellowship: 
    Enables outstanding U.S. graduate students to pursue specialization in area and language study or to add important international dimensions to their education. The Boren Fellowships fund students pursuing study of regions other than Western Europe, Canada, Australia, and New Zealand
